At first glance, SJ Health Insurance Advocates’ 10% fee for handling claims seems reasonable—you pay them a small percentage, and in return, they save you time and effort by navigating the complicated reimbursement process. In theory, this sounds like a great deal. In practice, however, their incompetence makes it a losing proposition.

Their handling of claims is frustratingly inefficient. Missed details, poor follow-up, and lack of understanding of the claims process mean that instead of maximizing your reimbursement, they may actually cost you money. After experiencing their service, it became clear that I would have been better off negotiating the claim myself.

If you’re considering using their services, think twice. You might save yourself the frustration—and walk away with a higher reimbursement—by handling the claim on your own.

They will scuttle your initial claim with health insurance and then to appeal, want a large non-refundable deposit and a contingency on any insurance benefits you receive from the appeal. BEWARE of any health care provider who uses SJHIA to handle the insurance claims process.

Scott, Susan, Heidi, and Kara will just ignore you if you don't provide them with what they ask. They asked for my daughter's insurance card which I don't have. I told them that, sent them a digital one, and asked if that would suffice, and they've ignored me ever since. I've sent follow ups that are all ignored. It seems they will not respond unless they get exactly what they want. Very strange. Would not recommend unless you want to waste a week in your search looking for a health insurance advocate. They finally contacted me 9 days later at which time I told them not to contact me again. I'm assuming they saw this review and tried to act like they care.

This company is deceptive and nature. They are non communicative once they have your information. When my mother wrote a review they threatened her with legal action within hours and two days in a row (today is day two). If the number of threats continue I will edit this post accordingly. Stay away from this company.

Absolutely worthless. When they're looking to sign you up as a client they talk a big game about understanding the insurance industry and fighting for reimbursement. Janice sounds competent and makes you believe these things would be true but she's only a sales advocate. You'll be handed off to a data entry idiot who'll submit poorly formatted claims well past the time that the services were performed.

Most of the claims were rejected by insurance. SJ Health refused to file any appeals or do anything even hinting at advocacy. In my view they did not appear to have any real knowledge about health insurance. I could've cut and pasted billing codes off an invoice myself.

Despite not receiving a single dime back from insurance they expected to get paid for their "services". They were suddenly great advocates for collecting their own fees.

Stay away from this group, they won't help you and you'll just end up owing more on top of some already expensive medical services.
