I'm actually shocked at all the bad reviews. I had a shoulder surgery here 3 months ago and everyone was wonderful. The staff was really nice and everyone was very polite. It's a better experience I had than at many other NYC hospitals.

If I could give Dr. Tony Wanich 6 stars, I would!!! His skill and expertise altered the course of my life forever.

I tore my ACL and had a bucket-handle meniscus tear. I came to HSS for a second opinion. My first surgeon looked at my MRI report and quickly decided on a quad graft. When I met with Dr. Wanich, he took his time to explain my MRI images to me and informed me my ACL was mainly detached from my bone but not fully ruptured and that it was still salvageable (which is rare but he had the experience to save it). I didn't even know I had any options other than a graft! We decided the quad graft would be a backup but he would try his best to do a repair once we got into surgery.

Dr. Wanich repaired both my ACL and meniscus and didn't do anything that was beyond necessity. The healing for a repair versus reconstruction is faster and I feel exponentially stronger every week. His kindness and gentle demeanor eased my anxieties and made this process much easier for me.

I keep thinking about what my life would've been like had I gone with my first surgeon and gotten a graft when it wasn't exactly necessary. My recovery process would've been much longer and much more painful. I can't thank Dr. Wanich and HSS enough!!!

HSS is world renowned for a reason. Everyone is very professional and appointments run on time, quickly, and smoothly. Highly recommend!

(I can't speak on the physical therapy offered here as I'm getting it somewhere else but Dr. Wanich deserves all the praise)

Alex completely screwed me up. Was healing ok after shoulder surgery and then he thought it was a good idea to load a massive amount of computerized weight on a new exercise machine, and then immediately leave me to go treat another patient. Shoulder tweaked after 1 set and so far I’ve been set back an extra 5 months with constant inflammation and restrictions. Parted ways with this place not long after. He apologized to the surgeon but not me. Maybe focus on monitoring your patients vs abandoning them and practicing your golf swing during sessions.

I’ve been an HSS patient since 2016 but this was my first visit to the Sports Medicine Institute. Great facility with easy access to parking from West Side Hwy. staff were very friendly. HSS is heads & tails above any other ortho clinic I’ve been to.

This place is a scam. I was told I needed “minor” knee surgery — I should have gotten a second opinion — and five months after surgery and constant physical therapy, my knee is worse than before. I used to lead an active life, but now I can’t jog or play sports. I’ve heard similar complaints about HSS from friends and colleagues. They also tell you tests and surgery are fully covered by your insurance, then charge you thousands of dollars. Avoid!

The physical therapists and doctors are fine but the prices are ridiculous. They charge $400 per PT appointment whereas Spear charges $125. And you do not get anything extra or special for that additional $275. Learn from my mistake and go elsewhere.

This review is specifically for HSS Westside physical therapy. I’ve had two terrible experiences with PT’s at HSS. I think they’re overworked & not genuinely interested in the patients recovery. I had Snay at this facility & the first day I met him, the whole evaluation after my 1st surgery, he was lecturing me about how he doesn’t want to hear if I Google symptoms & how he’s annoyed with patients who do that. The 2nd time I saw him, I was in pain, he asked me how I was doing and I was honest with him. He said I don’t want to hear it. I want you to tell me you’re “chugging along.” I couldn’t believe it. I wasn’t getting better because I had an undiagnosed Labral tear that my surgeon did not recognize. So, I’d do the exercises & feel more pain. I also have hypermobile EDS which he didn’t seem to take into account. One day, I expressed my concerns & he said to me “are you talking to someone?” Implying that I need to talk to a therapist. He then said, “because you talk a lot.” I simply ask questions regarding the exercises I’m doing & obviously if I still have pain, I’m going to be concerned & express that. I’ve found that male doctors/therapists in particular do not know how to speak or treat a young woman. I was genuinely offended by his comment as someone who was in pain for a long time, he just made me feel worse or like I was exaggerating my symptoms. I left to go get treated by a facility that spends time with their patients.
